The Peaberry coffee bean is a rare and near perfectly round coffee bean! As you already know, regular beans are of an oblong or oval type shape with a flat surface on one side. But many people believe that because of its round shape, the peaberry actually roasts better, which produces an enhanced flavour. About five percent of coffee are this type, which makes them a speciality and have a more full-bodied flavor.
The coffee bean is born within the seed, or cherry of the coffee tree. It is the fruit of the tree, much like cherries from a cherry tree! Normally they will develop inside the cherry and are split into two, sometimes giving them the name of 'flat beans' because this split gives one side a flat surface (the sides that face each other in the cherry.)
Just imagine if all coffee beans, were actually all 'peaberries'! What an incredible flavor we would enjoy each morning - not saying that we don't already. People believe that they roast better, because of this roundness in shape. They roll more evenly during the roasting process, and a more evenly roasted bean will naturally produce a better flavor.
Although rare, when it comes to drinking a cup made from peaberry beans - can we really taste the difference? I've never tried a coffee made from peaberry beans, but one could surmise that it would be similar to drinking a cup of instant coffee, compared with enjoying a cup made from freshly ground Jamaican Blue Mountain coffee beans or Hawaiian Kona Beans. There is no comparison really, fresh is always best.
At our website you will find information relating to beans, how to store them and how they are processed, if that is something you are interested in. It's surprising how much amazing information there is about our friendly cup of Joe!
